His first contact with the film take place in 1955 in Venice during the Biennale, during a trip that was offered after she won in seventeen years, the election of “the most beautiful Italian Tunis. “However, wanting to be a teacher, she accepts all the proposals made to it and makes a brief appearance in a short film, Golden Rings René Vautier.
His real debut in a feature film will be in 1958 by Jacques Baratier Goha and especially the Pigeon by Mario Monicelli, under the aegis of producer Franco Cristaldi whom she married in 1966. In the 1960s, it is found showing numerous critical and public success. Famous filmmakers will be competing for his presence in front of their cameras. This is Mauro Bolognini, Abel Gance, Luchino Visconti, Henri Verneuil, Philippe de Broca, Luigi Comencini, Federico Fellini, Blake Edwards, Henry Hathaway, and Sergio Leone.
En 1948, les rôles mineurs se multiplient, comme dans Le Maître de Lassie de Fred M. Wilcox, mais elle se fait remarquer dans le musical (Ma vie est une chanson de Norman Taurog) et figure dans Acte de violence du prestigieux Fred Zinnemann. L’année suivante, après avoir incarné l’une des Quatre Filles du docteur March avec June Allyson, tourné dans un film d’espionnage de George Sidney et figuré dans La Dynastie des Forsyte d’après John Galsworthy, elle obtient le rôle principal de Holiday Affair, film de Don Hartman où elle joue une mère de famille aux côtés de Robert Mitchum. Le succès du film incite les responsables de la MGM à lui offrir de meilleurs rôles. Après quelques rôles dans des productions comme Les Coulisses de Broadway, It’s a Big Country (sketch avec Gene Kelly) ou encore Just This Once, Janet Leigh rencontre la gloire.
From the end of the 1950s, she played more dramatic roles in such films as Safari (1958) Touch of Evil (1958) and The Manchurian Candidate (1962), but she achieved her most lasting recognition for her performance as the doomed Marion Crane in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960). For this role she was awarded the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
