Born Mabel Ethelreid Normand in New Brighton, Staten Island, New York, she grew up in extreme poverty. Her father, Claude Normand, was sporadically employed as a carpenter at Sailors’ Snug Harbor home for elderly seamen. Before she entered films at age 16 in 1909, Normand worked as an artist’s model, which included posing for postcards illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson, creator of the Gibson Girl image. She met director Mack Sennett whilst at D. W. Griffith’s Biograph Company and embarked on a tumultuous affair with him; he later brought her across when he founded Keystone Studios in 1912. Her first films portrayed her as a bathing beauty, but Normand quickly demonstrated a flair for comedy and became a star of Sennett’s short films. Normand appeared with Charles Chaplin and Roscoe (“Fatty”) Arbuckle in many short films.

In 1914 she starred with Chaplin and Marie Dressler in Tillie’s Punctured Romance. In 1918, as her relationship with Sennett came to an end, Normand signed a $3,500 a week contract with Samuel Goldwyn and opened a film studio in Culver City. Her breakup with Sennett seems to have caused Normand to re-evaluate her life and she embarked on a program of self-education, developing keen and lasting interests in reading and books.

Modern Day Pinup Girls Get Patriotic

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

The patriotic charm of pinup models posing in photos wearing sailor girl garb is not a new idea, but it has been embraced by a whole new generation of pinup models and photographers who are keeping the all American pinup sailor girl image alive.

The origins of pinup gals donning army duds can be traced to WWII, and the practice of GIs hanging pictures of sexy girls (“pinning them up”) in their lockers to keep them company overseas, and painting them on the sides of their fighter planes. As a show of support, the models began dressing in patriotic sailor or army outfits. The creation of the USO in the forties saw the formation of the infamous camp shows, at which performers and sex symbols from Hollywood, such as Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, and later, Marilyn Monroe, would make appearances to brighten the spirits of the troops. This tradition continues, and you can still find gorgeous gals in sailor suits singing and dancing and bringing a little fun to the fighting men and women of the US military.

Modern pinup girls might be edgier and have more tattoos than their predecessors, but they embrace the hair, makeup, and clothing styles of the forties and fifties. Most stay true to the “good girl” style of pose and dress in the tradition of early cheesecake pinup photography, just like the photos that hung in those GI’s lockers. The idea behind traditional pinup modeling is not to be trashy or overly-provocative, but to embody a cute and sexy girl next door look. Add to it a sailor girl or army girl outfit and you’ve got something a GI from any generation would love. Contemporary fashion designers have rediscovered the sexy charm of the military-inspired looks of the forties and fifties pinup culture, making it possible for models and photographers to continue to create patriotic imagery for our boys overseas with sailor girl suits, sailor dresses, shipmate costumes, first mate outfits, and army costumes.

These days, a patriotic show of support is important to a lot of Americans. With our country at war with two nations, many of our bravest and boldest have been deployed to dangerous and remote parts of the world. Pinup girls who want to show their support are sending photographs and calendars to troops fighting in foreign lands. One pinup model that sends frequent care packages to the troops often dresses up in sailor and army girl costumes and sends the photos to US army bases overseas. She has created a large and appreciative fan base and her donation operation has grown to be one of the largest of its kind created by a pinup model.

The tradition of the American patriotic pinup model will never go out of style. As long as there is a soldier being deployed to distant, dangerous lands, a photo of a pinup girl in a cute sailor girl dress, smiling only to him and saluting his bravery, will always have a place… pinned up on his wall.

The creation of the USO in the forties saw the formation of the infamous camp shows, at which performers and sex symbols from Hollywood, such as Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, and later, Marilyn Monroe, would make appearances to brighten the spirits of the troops. Connie Francis career

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Francis was born in the Italian Down Neck, or Ironbound, neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey. She attended Newark Arts High School in 1951 and 1952 there. She and her family moved to Belleville, NJ where she graduated “Salutatorian” from the Belleville High School Class of 1955 After an appearance on Ford Startime, Francis was advised to change her name from Franconero to something more easily pronounceable — and to quit the accordion that was part of her act.

Francis’ first single, “Freddy,” (1955) met with little success. Her next nine singles were also failures. During this time she was introduced to Bobby Darin, who was then an up-and-coming singer/songwriter. Darin’s manager arranged for him to help write several songs for Connie. Initially the two could not agree on the selection of material, but after several weeks Bobby and Connie developed a romantic interest. Unfortunately, Connie had a very strict Italian father who would separate the couple whenever possible. When Connie’s father learned that Bobby had suggested the two lovers elope after one of Connie’s shows, he ran Darin out of the building while waving a gun, telling Bobby to never see his daughter again. Bobby saw Connie only two more times after this, once when the two were scheduled to sing together for a television show and again later when Connie was spotlighted on the TV series This Is Your Life. By the time of the taping Bobby Darin had just married actress Sandra Dee, for which the show’s host congratulated Darin. According to her autobiography Connie first heard of Darin’s marriage to Dee while she and her father were listening to the radio announcement while driving through the Lincoln Tunnel. Connie’s father made a negative comment about Bobby finally being out of their lives. Angered, Connie wrote that at that moment she hoped the Hudson River had filled the Lincoln Tunnel, killing both herself and her father. Francis would later write that not marrying Darin was the biggest mistake of her life. She also appeared on the NBC interview program Here’s Hollywood.

The modernistic term “bikini” for a particular washup suit plan was first victimized by Heim and Reard . Heim was a designer designer from Cannes, France, who had intentional a very diminished bathing wooing called the “Atome” .

He chartered a skywriting planer to advertise his project by skywriting “Atome – the universe’s smallest bathing wooing” Three weeks afterwards, Reard, a mechanical technologist, had another skywriting plane compose “Bikini – - littler than the smallest bathing courting in the world.”

Statement Hair

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Hair straighteners can be used in many ways, and to create many different hair styles. A large number of celebrities, wanting to stand out and be noticed by the industry in order that they may find more fans, turn to stand-out hairstyles, so that they can carve out their own identity with their fans. In recent months this has been done to great effect by the pop singer Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stephani Germanotta. Lady Gaga has been a chart sensation throughout this year, and has attracted attention for a number of reasons. Aside from her catchy and popular songs, she has been noticed because of her alternative choice in clothes and her style overall, which is very different from most other celebrity singers.

Part of this style is her distinctive hair, which is moulded into shape with straighteners in order to create the trademark long, sharp look. Lady Gaga’s hair is completely straight, to fit in with the rest of her edgy look. Needless to say, without the use of hair straighteners the singer’s look would have none of the same edge or vibrancy that it is famed for. In fact, if she was not able to style her hair in this way, she is unlikely to have been able to create the image that she has now at all. Lady Gaga’s distinctive hair is very long, with a straight, thick block of fringe. It is also a very bright shade of peroxide blonde, a colour which would definitely not be as striking if it were to be in undefined curls or waves.

All together, the look is defined by the hair. It is therefore impossible, in some instances, of which this is an example, to create an attention grabbing statement style without the use of straighteners. This is widely known, and this is why using heat products on hair is now so important for the image. This is especially needed, as is clear, in the case of celebrity singers.

I’ve always been quite alternative and wanted to achieve hair styles that are really different and funky. I’ve found this website really helpful in creating unique styles www.ghdhair.com/hairstyles-guide .

Curly Hair

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Curly hair has become popular in recent years, after a period of time in which it was seen as less fashionable than it is now. Curly hair is synonymous with the nineteen eighties, when big hair and bold colours were at their height of popularity. After a period in the nineteen nineties and after the millennium where is remained less than popular, the look is now coming back. Curly hair is different from how it was in the past, however, as curly are now much easier to control. Defined curls, sometimes able to appear naturally on dark skinned women, are now a very popular look. The style can also be created with curling tongs, but can if fact be carried out just as easily with hair straighteners, as long as they are the ones with a rounded edge, as most straighteners are.

To create to look from hair which is naturally straight, the user should blow dry and heat protect their hair as they normally would. Although curlers can be used at this point, most people only own straighteners as they are much more popular and are easy to use, as they can be used to make hair both curly and straight. There is a choice at this point, whether the user wants to have loose, less defined curls. This wavy look is synonymous with the California beach hippy trend, and is very popular among glamorous young celebrities, as it is low maintenance and doesn’t make the owner look as though they have tried too hard. To create this look the user should wrap their hair around the straighteners length ways, so that the curl will make the whole stand of hair bouncy and give it a distinct wave.

To create a tighter and more defined curl, which traditionally looks better with shorter hair, the user should wrap smaller strands of hair around the straightener iron and hold it for longer. This will create a tighter and more defined curl, in the style of ringlets.

I’ve always had straight hair and have found it really hard to create the perfect curls. However using ghd straighteners I can make curls that stay in my hair all day long. Visit www.ghd-hairstraighteners.com and find the best type of ghds for your hair.

Mamie Van Doren – Bikini star

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Dances To A Strippers Story
Van Doren starred in several bad girl movies that later became cult films. She also appeared in some of the first movies to feature Rock & Roll music and became identified with this rebellious style, and made some rock records. In the film Untamed Youth in 1957, she was the first woman to sing rock and roll in a Hollywood musical.

Many of Van Doren’s film roles showcased her ample curves, and her on screen wardrobe usually consisted of tight sweaters, low-cut blouses, form-fitting dresses, and daring (for the era) swimsuits. While she and other blonde bombshell contemporaries as Cleo Moore, Sheree North, Jayne Mansfield, and Diana Dors did not attain the same level of superstar status as Marilyn Monroe, Van Doren did become a very famous star and notable Hollywood sex symbol. Marilyn, Mamie and Jayne Mansfield were known as the “Three M’s.

Van Doren’s autobiography, Playing the Field (1987), brought much new attention to the veteran sex symbol and proved to be her biggest media splash in over 25 years. Since the book’s publication she has often been interviewed and profiled and has occasionally returned to acting.
